City Township Tour

We recommend that you first do the Township Tour and then the City Tour for the following reason. At the end of the tour we drop you off directly at Table Mountain which gives you the opportunity to visit the most famous landmark in South Africa – Table Mountain – in your own time.

Our tour begins at the District Six Museum. Here we learn more about the history of Cape Town and why so many townships developed. After we have extensively informed ourselves about the ‘great wrong’ that was done, our trip continues into Langa – a township near Cape Town. We first visit trader who sell South Africa art made from wire, metal sheets or other ‘waste’. South Africans are skilled at making beautiful artefacts from ordinary rubbish. A Coke can could be turned into a tin palm and little dolls can be made from colourful leftover scraps of metal.

This art partially developed because there was no way to buy kids normal toys without proper finances.  Toy cars were designed from wire and scraps.

Next up we visit a South Africa family where you will notice the scarce furnishings. Almost everyone here sub-leases to make more money for the family.

We take a walk through the poor district and take a look at different streets. We will see small villas where some inhabitants have managed to earn some money. Most of the inhabitants are very poor and do not have much living space. The houses, partly made of wood remnants and corrugated iron, are fragile and fall over easily in strong winds. Rain and cold are the biggest problem and so children are in danger of getting pneumonia living in these make-shift huts.

We will visit a South Africa pub and try local beer. The day trip continues to a Sangoma who will tell you more about your health for a fee! We will visit a school and interrupt the children during their lessons for a short while. Finally, we drive briefly through Khayelitsha, the largest township of Cape Town.

Our day trip takes us back to the city centre where we will show you a number of sights around Table Mountain.
