On a Cape Town Afternoon Tour, you can experience an interesting township tour in South Africa. It differs very little from the morning tour. However, we cannot attend any school, as most of the children have left school at this time of the day.

We collect you at your accommodation or you can meet us directly at the District Six Museum. Here we discover more about the dark history of Cape Town, and why these poverty-stricken areas developed.

The old apartheid government wanted to separate the different people with different skin colors. Learn more about racial segregation on the following page.

District Six

The District Six was a lively neighborhood in the vicinity of the city center and was simply torn down. The current Waterfront and the harbor area were built with the remnants of those buildings. After learning some of the history of Cape Town, our half-day tour heads for Langa and Khayelitsha. We will first take a look at a South African street vendor offering items made of tin, paper, beads, colorful fabrics, wire, and other gift items for sale. We visit a family and you can look at the interior of the apartment. Most families rent out space in their home or house to other individuals. Every penny is important and the rental improves the monthly income slightly.

Officially, South Africa has 25 million unemployed. The statistic is not quite correct, as most people have a side job. They earn their income as gardeners or painters. In the early afternoon, the women start to prepare their grills. Chickens are slaughtered and plucked. Chicken meat or sheep's heads are cooked on a large grill.

Especially in the warm summertime, the smells mix with the aroma of spices, and the hustle and bustle of the business is interesting to observe. If you are thirsty, you can visit a real South African pub and try the local beer. After that we continue to other streets and we will visit a Sangoma. The Savior or Sangoma is a highly respected person in the church. Some South Africans visit a Sangoma up to 3 times a year.

Our half-day tour goes to Khayelitsha, so that we also get an impression of this settlement. We are sure that you will enjoy our lunch tour.
