Next to corrugated iron huts, you will also discover a “little Beverly Hills”. Some of the residents have prospered but did not want to lose the closeness with their families and friends. In the middle of this poor district, there are small villas. The primary language is IsiXhosa, but English and Afrikaans are also spoken. The mother tongue remains Xhosa – a special click language. The people are proud and friendly, and you will immediately notice all the laughing children.

Shebeens – South African Taverns

On our visit we will look up a Shebeen (African pub) to taste the home brewed beer. The Shebeens were prohibited during the apartheid era, but often used as a secret meeting places during those years where people could come together to discuss the harsh laws. Even the founders and members of the ANC would meet up in these forbidden drinking holes.

During your visit, you will be able to observe a lot of women rigging up their barbeques. They grill chicken, sheep's heads and also “pap” dishes made from maize.  You may be able to taste some of the delicious corn porridge with beans called Umngqusho. This food is an ancient recipe of the Xhosa and in part a staple food of many people in South Africa. At a memorial service, wedding or other festivities, the Umngqusho is indispensable in the Xhosa kitchen!
