South Africa’s Provinces

Western Cape 

The colonization of South Africa was started by the Europeans in the Western Cape. It is located on the Atlantic Ocean and offers an area of ​​129.448.2 km ². The population density is about 5 million people. Tourists from all over the world visit the region at the Cape of Good Hope, which is located about 44 km south of Cape Town. Popular is the rough west coast and especially the wine areas. The Western Cape also includes the Garden Route. At the heart of the Garden Route is the lagoon city of Knysna. Of course, we have to mention Table Mountain - the landmark of Cape Town! Cape Town is one of the few cities in the world that is located in a national park. 

Eastern Cape

With approximately 170,000 km², the province of Eastern Cape has about 6.8 million inhabitants and is composed of the former homelands Transkei and Ciskei. The capital of the Eastern Cape is Bisho. The Eastern Cape was the home of Nelson Mandela and so offers much South African history and culture. It is visited by many travellers from all over the world because of the '' Wild Coast ''. Port Elizabeth and the Addo National Park are the highlights of this province and are advertised in many guidebooks as an extension of the Garden Route. From June to the end of November, you can admire the Big 7 of South Africa. The Big 7 are elephants, lions, buffaloes, leopards, rhinos, white sharks and whales.

Northern Cape

The Northern Cape is located above the Western Cape and borders Botswana and Namibia. It is the largest province of the Rainbow Nation with an area of ​​362,600 km². Although it is so big, it has only one million inhabitants. In the south of the Northern Cape lies the Karoo (semi-desert) and in the north the legendary Kalahari. The Northern Cape was particularly famous around the world for the diamond discoveries in Kimberley. Many tourists and South Africans visit Namaqualand in the spring, as the blossoming of wildflowers is especially beautiful here. Here you can admire vast carpets of different coloured flowers. Between June and November, you can also admire whales and dolphins on the coast.

Free State

The Free State has an area of ​​129,821.1 km ² and 2.8 million inhabitants live here. The region is divided into five districts:

  • Lejweleputswa
  • Thabo Fezile Dabi
  • Mofutsanyane

70% of all agricultural products are produced here on about 30,000 farms.

KwaZulu Natal

The province of KwaZulu Natal can be found in the east of South Africa by the eminent Indian Ocean. The capital of the province is Pietermaritzburg. The most beautiful attraction is the 3,000-meter-high Drakensberg, which has been declared a World Heritage Site. The whole region offers a lot of culture, history, 18 different national parks and a beautiful subtropical coastal region.


Although Gauteng is the smallest of all provinces, it has over 10.5 million inhabitants. The area is approximately 16,927.1 km². The gold city Johannesburg is the provincial capital of the country with over 8 million people. Due to the Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg is the focal point of many round trips, safaris and tours.


The province Mpumalanga is located in the northeast of the rainbow nation. The region offers a variety of sights and highlights. The province is 79,500 km ² large. It has a population of 3.6 million people. The capital of the region is Nelspruit on the edge of the Kruger National Park. The Kruger Park is actuated by many travelers from all over the world and renowned for the Big Five.


The region covers an area of ​​123,900 km² and has a population of 5.3 million, divided geographically into three parts, bordered to the north by the states of Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique, and by the northern province of Kruger National Park be explored.

Northwest Province

The North West Province is the holiday destination for the residents of Gauteng. The Pilanesberg National Park and the desert city of Sun City are the highlights of the malaria-free province.
