Sangoma - traditional healer or voodoo.!?

Among the black population in South Africa, traditional healers are especially widespread. They enjoy very high esteem within their respective community and, as a healer, are very respected people. We distinguish between 3 types of healers: the "Sangoma" (magical healer), the "Herbalist" (medicine man) and the "Abakhulu Gogo" (fortune teller). All 3 types are generally called "Sangoma". On the odd occasion you could even spot a monkey hand hanging from the ceiling or leaves have hung to dry, which will be used in their ‘muti’.

Is  voodoo  just superstition?

The native people in the townships will not know the term voodoo, as we understand it in Western culture.  For the natives, the advice of a healer is a very serious matter that is deeply connected to their faith. For people from the Western culture, this topic is very difficult to understand. A traditional healer does so much more than just a placebo effect, which makes perfect medical sense if it helps a person. The traditional healer actually the respective patient helps with the gift he has. He uses ancient traditions and  for the indigenous people, the belief in their ancestors is omnipresent and needs to be respected.

Traditional healers use different ingredients

Sangoma South Africa.Township Tours

The "Herbalist" and "Sangoma" use ancient recipes and knowledge about homeopathic ingredients and properties from nature. Their ancestors have passed on their knowledge for generations. The healers go to great lengths in collecting the ingredients they need which  come from all over Africa. Ingredients for their medicine include plants, bark, animal skins, parts of reptiles and snakes, or feathers from special birds, just to name a few.

The various ingredients are mixed, for example, as a powder, which is needed at home for the ritual burning inside the house.  Oils or essences are mixed and extracted, which they then carry with them. The healers explicitly pay attention to which area the ingredients come from as this may impact the outcome of using the muti. An example this is that: crops from plants can not be obtained from a sandy area and in sandy areas the subsoil is unstable. In areas with dense soil the plants grow strong from a good environment and plentiful nutrience. The special bark of a tree is useless to them if the tree has grown in a valley covered in shadow and animals are only used if they have a strong descent. However, the aforementioned unusable ingredients may well be used for black magic!
